In general, acne treatment starts with topical interventions. Most people will see a significant improvement in their acne by switching to a skincare routine that incorporates effective, topical, anti-acne medications in concentrations appropriate for their skin type and acne severity.
However, if after 2-3 months, there is no significant improvement in your skin with topical treatment alone, it may be time to consider adding an oral medication to your acne treatment such as an antibiotic, hormonal contraceptive, or Accutane.
Nevertheless, if the acne is very severe or leaving scars on the skin, a dermatologist may suggest Accutane immediately in the first visit.
