Salicylic acid is used to unclog the pores of the sebaceous glands. Salicylic acid is actually a “natural” product derived from plants like willow bark. It has a light peel effect on the skin, sloughing away dead skin cells that clog pores. It won’t kill acne bacteria, but when used in the common 2% strength, it is less irritating than benzoyl peroxide.
