Does sugar cause acne?

Yoram Harth, MD
By Yoram Harth, MD | 2020-03-04

This is an easy answer - yes, sugar does cause acne. Not only is sugar an empty carb with no nutritional value (just being honest…), it rapidly breaks down into glucose, absorbs into the bloodstream, and causes a spike in insulin. These spikes in insulin are harmful to our health in general but particularly so when it comes to acne.

People who are acne-prone should try to keep their intake of sugar to a minimum. This includes all foods that contain a lot of overt sugars (fruit juices, sodas), artificially sweetened foods, as well as packaged foods that contain both sugar and saturated fats, such as white bread, candy, jam, pizza, etc.).
