Does seafood cause acne?

Yoram Harth, MD

Thinking about shrimp for dinner? Well if you struggle with acne, you may want to think again. Shrimp and most other shellfish (like crab, scallops, and lobster) may be making your your acne worse. The reason is that shellfish contains iodine, which can be a common trigger of flare ups in many people with acne.

On the other hand, omega-3 rich fish such as salmon, trout, and halibut, seem to reduce acne breakouts and improve skin healing. So if you want your seafood and clear skin too, stick to those instead.
