Does nicotine cause acne?

Dr. Yoram Harth, MD
By Dr. Yoram Harth, md | 2018-12-17

There are different views on the relation of nicotine and acne. One Italian study found higher rates and higher severity of acne in smokers. The same results were found in a study of 17,345 Chinese adolescents. A third study that followed 27,083 young men over 20 years found that smokers had actually lower rates of severe acne than non-smokers. A fourth study, on 594 teenagers found a lower prevalence of acne in female’s smokers but not in boys that smoked. Although the evidence for the relationship between acne and nicotine is conflicting, it is absolutely clear that smoking is—in general—detrimental to your health and should be avoided.
