Q&A

A Dermatologist gave me antibiotics (Trimethoprim) for my scarring and the only thing they are doing is making me get big, swollen cysts?

Yoram Harth, MD

To see an effect, you need you these antibiotics for at least 2 months. If you did not see any improvement in 2 months, you need to switch to another treatment. Having said that Trimethoprim is one of the less effective anti-acne medications. Depending on your age your physician can prescribe better topical medications, some other antibiotics (such aa minocycline) or accutane.
